• SRS Detachment at Augsburg, Germany now listed as closed [October 1995]. The Augsburg detachment was "done away with years ago," I am informed. Thanks for the correction. The 1995-96 Estimates, however, still report that the SRS is responsible for one detachment (p. 70). Where are they hiding and, just as important for those of us with suspicious minds, what are they up to?

• Correction to various endnotes [September 1995]: The statement made by Margaret Bloodworth, Deputy Clerk, Security and Intelligence, on 2 May 1995 was delivered to the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs, *not* the Subcommittee on National Security. The transcript of the testimony of Ms. Bloodworth and CSE Chief A. Stewart Woolner is now available on-line, only four months late. Well worth a read, even if it's not accurate in every detail. (Margaret, for crying out loud, it's the *COMMUNICATIONS* Security Establishment, not the Canadian Security Establishment! Stew, if you really want to know how many people were working for CBNRC in 1946, check here.)
• Link added to GCHQ info at IntelWeb [September 1995]. Here's hoping it's more accurate than their CSE info. It's been several months since I pointed out to them that (a) Ward Elcock is *not* the director of CSE and (b) INFOSEC is *not* its only role. Would they listen to me? Noooooo. They *were* good enough, however, to add a link to this page.

• CTV News broadcast portions of an interview with a recently laid-off CSE analyst, Jane Shorten, on three successive nights on 12, 13, and 14 November 1995. Shorten confirmed that CSE monitors calls into and out of many embassies in Canada, including those of friendly countries such as Japan, Mexico, and South Korea (who are economic and diplomatic intelligence targets), that Canadian embassies in many countries are used as intercept sites, and that CSE intercepts many calls involving Canadians in the course of its activities. None of this, of course, should be any surprise (as the information elsewhere on these pages should demonstrate), but much excitement - and deserved attention - has ensued. Tally ho! Stay tuned for further developments.

• CSE got a mention in issue number 59 (July 1995) of Commentary, an unclassified CSIS publication:

  "The role of the CSE in pursuing Canada's economic and commercial interests is difficult to set out definitively, given the fact CSE lacks a detailed statutory basis similar to that of CSIS. There have, in fact, been some recent indications that CSE is seeking to strengthen its analytical capacity in this area. ...in January 1995 CSE advertised for applications from university graduates for analyst positions noting that 'graduation in fields such as economics, international business, commerce... would be an asset'."

  Good spotting, CSIS! Does this mean there's an expansion under way in N Group (Political and Economic Production), or just a little refocusing of targets? You can check out the actual ad on page E8 of the 21 January 1995 Ottawa Citizen.

• What's the story behind the monitoring site that is reported to have operated at Prince Rupert, BC shortly after the Second World War (as mentioned in Best Kept Secret, by John Bryden)? Did this site really exist? If so, during what years did it operate? I'm somewhat inclined to believe that this might actually be a reference to the Masset site (yes, I know Prince Rupert is on the mainland). Anybody out there know the real story?
• What's happening with the former NRC radio observatory site at Lake Traverse, Algonquin Park? Is CSE/SRS still looking at establishing a monitoring site there?
• Who was that who came to Ottawa in May 1995? We don't normally fly the Union Jack at CFS Leitrim.
• And, speaking of our transatlantic relations, whatever happened to the long-lost SRS exchange program with the British Army?

• "Say, Bill, what's the breakdown in CSE's budget between SIGINT and INFOSEC?"
  "Oh, that's highly secret. The Deputy Clerk, Security and Intelligence, recently revealed to the members of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs that that kind of information would `[do] benefit to those adverse to Canada's interests'."   "Gosh, it's a good thing that some traitor hasn't revealed it then."
  "I'll say. Unless, of course, you count that time in 1991 when CSE's Director-General of INFOSEC, Alan Pickering, informed the members of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts that INFOSEC receives about 20-22 per cent of CSE's budget, leaving 78-80 per cent for SIGINT."
